I cannot count the number of times I've driven between Placerville and South Lake Tahoe, and it is a very pretty drive. However, there is an exit where Highway 50 becomes 2 lanes instead of 4. It is called Ice House Road. Never been there before this past Sunday. Beautiful scenery as you climb into the Sierras. After about 15 miles, you past Union Valley Reservoir on your left. At 16.8 miles, you come to a service road, then turn right onto it. Go for a short distance (.2 miles), then turn left onto another service (dirt) road, and go to the end. There is then a foot trail you take for about .5 miles down to the falls (Ballis Falls, I understand). Beautiful spot. You can also climb up to the top of the falls.
After the falls, we went back down Hwy. 50 to the Apple Hill area and visited the High Sierra Iris Gardens. Another beautiful spot. Tons of iris's.
